Frameworks: You Should Probably Start Now

Healthcare cybersecurity achieved a new high, averaging $9.23 million in costs for each breach and nearly 50 million health records being exposed or stolen in 2022. Frameworks can help, but how does the “always-on” cybersecurity leader eat the elephant with the abundance of frameworks available? NIST covers critical infrastructure. HIPAA regulates disclosure of data. CIS controls safeguard against cybersecurity threats. HITRUST helps with cloud service providers. COBIT delivers guidelines on governance and the ISACA framework. ISO 27001 provides a security management code of practice. And the list goes on. This carefully curated panel of experts will discuss moving beyond frameworks to put action into security.

Taming Wild Device Data

We have come a long way since the first implanted medical device - a pacemaker - in 1958. Today, hospital patients average 10-15 connected devices per bed, 91.3 million US consumers use wearable health and fitness sensors daily, and the number of connected wearable medical devices is nearing 1 billion. Approximately 30% of the world’s total data comes from healthcare and it is expected to grow 36% by 2025. That’s faster than manufacturing, financial services, and media/entertainment data combined. Such data can help doctors with patient health context and make a life-saving difference in patient care, as well as revolutionize care management and heighten patient experience. But before providers can reach the promise held by wearable and medical device data, some pressing challenges must be addressed including maintaining privacy and security, data transmission, tight regulations, and a distributed stakeholder network. Join these CHIME trailblazers to explore the proliferation of device data flooding the industry and discover how to best tame, leverage, and position for success.

Health Data Security: No Longer an Easy Target

The digital transformation of healthcare requires physical infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data privacy to work together to achieve aims relative to advanced communication, processing, and sharing. We all understand the need for transformation. As we race towards seamless integration, computational algorithms, the IoT/IoMT, and artificial intelligence to accomplish digital health goals, U.S. healthcare has become the most lucrative target for threat actors there is. What we don’t understand is that healthcare digital transformation cannot occur until we have solved the dual-edged issues of privacy and security. In 2022, U.S. healthcare entities suffered an average of over 1,400 weekly cyberattacks per organization, an increase of 86% since 2021. January of this year alone saw Killnet – the Russian hacking group – disrupting a litany of hospitals by attacking third-party vendor hosting on their websites. The risk is real. Join this session as experts explore the nuances of data-sharing, security, and privacy to add healthcare to a digital world while keeping data safe.

I Need New Skills, Right Now

Meet the hospital IT leader, part of the executive team with skills in communication and strategic planning, knowledge of internal operations and tech initiatives, all wrapped up with a strong business acumen. Meanwhile, quiet quitting, hybrid- or anywhere-first work strategies, balancing resources, and the blitz of digital technologies demanded by consumers, regulators, and other stakeholders, have super-charged the tech environment, challenging these leaders to have new skills to achieve competitiveness, safety, security, and organization-wide modernization. It’s a herculean feat but an essential requirement. Come to this conversation between CHIME domestic and international experts as they discuss the skills needed to face today’s challenges and opportunities in the health system.

Addressing People Shortages: Technologically Inclined Workflows

Leaders today are faced with the options of doing more individually or being more as a leader of a high-performing team when solving the workforce challenges in health IT. Yet the war for talent ensues as 47% of healthcare leaders cite training costs as a lead disrupter of performance, and 33% acknowledged disruption due to lack of skill. With hospital executives facing turnover and a shortage of skilled talent, staying resilient and optimistic impedes plans for progress. This carefully curated panel of CHIME members will come at workforce challenges from all angles, domestically and globally, including attracting/retaining talent, training, re-engineering through technology, administrative automation, outsourcing, and appropriate projection of future needs.

AI Strategies Getting into Formation

Some of the biggest gains from AI are in healthcare administration with around $60 billion being spent on 9 everyday tasks, such as eligibility checks, prior authorization, claims management, and payment; and clinicians spent 29% of their time on administrative activities and electronic health record input. A distraction from the mission side of working in patient care, AI/ML applications can improve efficiency in the back office and aid in documentation, filling prescriptions and enhancing fraud detection. Yet, the maturity level of AI to act in full-automation clinically has not yet been achieved. For example, the FDA oversight of clinical decision support assumes a doctor is playing intermediary in the final decision, which is quite different from having AI take direct action. This panel will answer the hard questions about what AI is and what it’s not, and what the future holds as this computational power improves.
